 About me

Thank you for visiting my site! My name is Dr. Layne Macdonald. I am currently a resident at the University of Rochester in Plastic Surgery.  As a kid, I kept a paintbrush, pencil, or camera in hand at all times. I drew my first portrait at 11 and was mesmerized by the complexity of the human face. In college at Wake Forest University, I studied Chemistry, Biology, and Art History.  It was in an art history class that I first learned of the artists and surgeons who worked together to develop the field of Plastic Surgery. Sir Harold Gillies was my biggest inspiration. Being an artist and a surgeon, he used his attention to detail and innovation to reconstruct faces and much more for injured soldiers of WWI. I knew that, like him, my artistic skills would set me apart as a surgeon and that through them I could offer patients surgical options that would actualize their vision. During college, I was awarded a scholarship to study abroad in Paris, France. This scholarship was founded on the belief that a passion for humanities is crucial for the development of future physicians. In Paris, I spent most days panting in Parisian gardens and wandering the halls of art museums. I roamed the same streets that Dr. Paul Tessier and Claude Monet roamed, hoping that I too could be inspired by the world they saw. While studying medicine at LSU in New Orleans, I balanced my passion for medicine and art in a city where French culture could be tasted in each dish. Now, as a plastic surgery resident, I am using my artistic training each day to offer my patients the optimal aesthetic result.
